Fed Cup: Elena Baltacha plays first in GB tie v Sweden

Elena Baltacha will face Johanna Larsson in the opening rubber of Great Britain’s Fed Cup World Group II play-off against Sweden in Boras. The British number one, 63rd in the world, plays her 71st-ranked Swedish opponent at 1300 BST on Saturday.

They will be followed on court at Borashallen by British number two Anne Keothavong, 79th in the world, and 54th-ranked Swede Sofia Arvidsson. The reverse singles and a doubles rubber take place on Sunday.

Sweden’s art minister takes heat over ‘racist’ cake

Sweden’s culture minister was feeling the heat Wednesday after a weekend art exhibit in which she cut up a cake baked into the shape of a cartoonishly stereotyped African woman. A group representing Swedes of African descent has called for Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth to resign over that it called a racist caricature. But Liljeroth defended her participation, saying the cake was designed to “challenge the traditional image of racism.”

“While the symbolism in the piece is despicable, it is unfortunate and highly regrettable that the presentation has been interpreted as an expression of racism by some,” Liljeroth said in a statement issued by her office. “The artistic intent was the exact opposite.”

Finland beats Sweden in women’s hockey

Finland and Switzerland moved on to semifinals of the women’s world hockey championships with quarter-final victories Wednesday. Finland faces Canada and the Swiss take on the defending champion U.S. on Friday. The winners play for gold and the losers for bronze Saturday.

Switzerland came into the championship seeded sixth, so their 5-2 win over fourth-seeded Russia was upset of the tournament so far. Finland rode a pair of first period goals and a 43-save performance by goaltender Noora Raty to get by Sweden 2-1.

Canada hammers Sweden in WC tuneup

The Canadian women’s hockey team beat Sweden 8-0 in a warm-up game for the world championship tournament. Meghan Agosta of Ruthven, Ont., scored twice and Rebecca Johnston of Sudbury, Ont., had a goal and two assists to pace Canada on Thursday.

Gillian Apps of Unionville, Ont., and Haley Irwin of Thunder Bay, Ont., each had a goal and an assist. Vicki Bendus of Wasaga Beach, Ont., Jayna Hefford of Kingston, Ont., and Toronto’s Natalie Spooner also scored.

Sweden’s defense minister steps down

The Swedish defense minister is resigning after facing harsh criticism over leaked plans to build a weapons plant in Saudi Arabia, a government official said Thursday.

Sten Tolgfors is stepping down at his own request, Roberta Alenius, a spokeswoman for Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, told The Associated Press. She declined to discuss the reason and said more information would be presented at a news conference Thursday.

Prince Charles makes first official visit to Sweden

Britain’s Prince Charles made his first official visit to Sweden on Thursday, nearly 40 years after Carl XVI Gustaf became the country’s king.

The king’s wife, Queen Silvia, said she was glad to finally play host to Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. “It’s very nice since Prince Charles during my time, unfortunately, hasn’t had the possibility to visit earlier,” the Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet quoted the queen as saying ahead of his arrival. “But we have a very close contact with the British royal family and so we’re very happy about their visit.”

Drawing withdrawn in Sweden after Jewish protests

Organizers of a Christian art exhibit in Sweden have a withdrawn a drawing that Jewish groups said was anti-Semitic.

The drawing by two Swedish pastors showed three rats — one of which carried a rifle — eating what appears to be a map of the Palestinian territories.

The image sparked protests even before the exhibit’s opening Friday in a Stockholm church, including from the Simon Wiesenthal Center, which said it depicted Jews as rats.

Sweden in Saudi Arms Deal Controversy

Confidential documents revealed this week show how Sweden has in secret been helping Saudi Arabia to plan the construction of an advanced arms factory to produce anti-tank missiles.

Saudia Arabia, one of the most brutal dictatorships in the world condemned for its human rights violations by organisations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, has nevertheless for several years been assisted by experts from the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI).

Sweden man Taylor Carbonaro charged

Taylor D. Carbonaro, 21, of Lake Road, Sweden, has been charged with second-degree vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated following a crash early this morning in Sweden that killed one person, according to Monroe County sheriff’s deputies.

The accident happened just before 1 a.m. on Route 19 near White Road, about a mile outside Brockport. Deputies said the vehicle slammed into a tree, a pole and a parked vehicle. They said two people were in the car, and the female passenger died at the scene.

Latvala leads way in Sweden

Jari-Matti Latvala of Finland led the way in the Rally of Sweden, the second leg of the World Rally Championship, after afternoon action on the first full day Friday. Latvala, driving a Ford, was in early command after the first nine special stages having started out from Karlstad and then led the way across the border into Norway through to special stage nine.

The Finn had a provisional 17.2sec lead over compatriot Mikko Hirvonen of Citroen despite the latter winning on his favoured terrain in the last two editions.
